Past Project: Documentation of Holocaust Survivors

I traveled to my hometown of Milwaukee, WI, to paint portraits of Holocaust survivors. This is my heritage and these are the people I grew up with. Both of my parents were each in 6 concentration camps and survived the Holocaust. The people I am painting are the “Greenah”, a term which refers to the newcomers to the United States. I am being sponsored by the Coalition for Jewish Learning, which is the umbrella organization for the Holocaust Education and Resource Center of Milwaukee. I spent four weeks during the Fall of 2004 in the community, and painted 11 oil portraits from life. These portraits are the property of the HERC. This project is a continuation of the portraits I painted of my parents, who are both gone, and I feel an urgency to document the remaining survivors, as each year there are fewer”

  1. I am so thankful that the Lord led me to you in the early 70’s at the Art Fair on the Square in Madison, WI. I was with my friend who is also Jewish, and I asked you if you ever did portraits from a photo. if I remember rightly, you had not or were new at it. Anyway I now have a wonderful portrait of my Mother and Father. (2) It definitely was the Lords hand guiding me as He always has, the portraits cost me $25 each. That was a lot for me as a single parent. God is good and blesses his children with favor. I am not Jewish by birth, but as I am a ‘born again” Christian, I have been grafted into the vine by the blood of Christ Jesus. It was an honor meeting you, maybe someday I will see you in Albuquerque

  2. Your portrait Roger Hoisington caught his kind looks and his soul. I went to high school with him in Germany and Texas, and wondered what happened to him. We called him “Roger the Lodger”. A good man. Thank you. Liv Hicks
